Adding value throughout the concept-to-reality journey
The goal of the Innovation & Sustainability Center is to add measurable value to a process that fulfills the “Concept to Reality” tagline faster than ever before. For the past 75 years, Rosti has been dedicated to bringing customers’ designs to life, but the Digital Innovation Lab has significantly sped up this process, and it can now be accomplished within 72 hours.
Staying agile in today’s fast-moving, constantly evolving development cycles—where flexibility is a key to success—is a “must-win battle.” Rosti is one of the few companies equipped to leverage the latest advancements in 3D printing to create major time savings over traditional prototype part testing. Our goal is to help customers break design boundaries by physically testing molded components and assemblies in a fraction of the usual time.
The 72-hour concept-to-reality process
Once Rosti’s engineers receive the customer’s 3D product data and specifications, the clock starts. Design and product requirements are analyzed, and added-value optimizations are recommended to maximize efficiency and minimize production costs. At this stage, design analysis is finished and component prototyping begins for physical testing.
Rosti’s molding experience is a core competency. This background gives us the ability to leverage best practices from our extensive knowledge base of past projects and case studies when developing digital simulations of the injection molding process. Analyzing these digital simulations provides benefits not only for component design, but also enables optimization studies of molding scenarios. This gives accurate production insights into part quality and optimized product costs. The range of aspects examined includes gating, cooling, distortion, and cycle times.
The results of the simulations feed into the tooling process. Once the design is finalized, the printed tool cavities and cores are started. The tools are built from the ground up in high-temperature resins that can withstand typical injection molding conditions. After inspection and assembly, the tools are ready for molding in the lab’s dedicated molding machine.
The molded parts are verified by optical laser scanning. Full metrology reports are available in minutes to confirm production intent and support early predictive analysis of the resulting product measurements.
The Innovation & Sustainability Center adds value for designers and end users
Using the Innovation & Sustainability Center gives designers more freedom. This agile development platform enables quick design iterations that can be physically tested in the intended design materials. Several design iterations can be created in the time it would take to produce a single design example on a traditional product development schedule.
Design envelopes can be pushed further, as the time and capital investments are significantly less compared to previous analog development cycles. Designers are empowered to fail forward and freed from the restrictions of time and investment. Ideas can be tried, refined, and repeated to maximize product functionality—a process that ultimately maximizes added value for the end user.
